Anne Mondy: much more than just Pierre Mondy’s daughter – a visual artist who has turned her art into a brand

We are, of course, familiar with the name Mondy. That of Pierre Mondy, a towering figure in French theatre, cinema and television, a popular actor in productions ranging from *La 7e Compagnie* to *Commissaire Cordier*, but also a leading director. Yet his daughter, Anne Mondy, has achieved something far more difficult than it might seem when bearing such a famous surname: she has forged an artistic world that is entirely her own.

Born in 1972, Anne Mondy is the daughter of Pierre Mondy and Annie Fournier, a model in the 1960s who went on to become a visual artist herself. In other words, creativity ran in both sides of the family. From a very early age, Anne was cutting out, collecting, tearing up and sticking together images. Even as a teenager, her bedroom had already become a sort of visual laboratory filled with photographs, magazine covers and scrap paper.

However, she did not immediately choose an artistic career. For over twenty years, Anne Mondy worked behind the scenes in the entertainment industry, notably in communications, press relations and artistic direction. When she was young, Pierre Mondy had even suggested she consider a career as an actress. She refused. Her interests lay elsewhere: creating worlds rather than standing in front of the camera.

Then her creative work, which she had long pursued alongside her professional career, gradually took centre stage. Anne Mondy then developed what would become her true signature style: Papertorn, literally ‘torn paper’. Since 2014, she has been using fragments of images, typefaces, paint, various materials and sometimes objects to compose highly dense, instantly recognisable works. Popular culture, cinema, music, icons and collective memories collide in her compositions, where the accumulation of elements remains carefully controlled.
Anne Mondy’s collage is therefore not simply a juxtaposition of images. She selects, tears, moves and layers the fragments before reconstructing a new image. Her work constantly plays with memory: a familiar photograph or a famous face may appear amidst dozens of references, only to be transformed by this new environment. This probably explains the accessibility of her work: one recognises something before discovering everything that has been added around it.

Her work has gradually moved beyond canvases alone to extend into other media. In particular, she has carried out projects and collaborations centred on cars, including Lamborghinis and Jaguars, whilst simultaneously developing a business in interior design and set design under the name Anne Mondy Interiors. Her website also showcases collaborations with companies and events such as Club Med, Engie and the Cannes Film Festival.

Anne Mondy is now recognised as a visual artist specialising in collage and is listed on the art market. Her works have been shown in various exhibitions and galleries, notably in Paris. In 2020, *Le Parisien* published a profile of her to mark her exhibition at the Galerie Valerie Guerin, already highlighting her transition from being ‘Pierre Mondy’s daughter’ to an artist in her own right.

But Anne Mondy takes the idea of taking art out of the galleries a step further. Her creative world is now expressed through Anne Mondy Signature, a collection that brings her designs to clothing, T-shirts, sweatshirts, bags, accessories and home décor items. Her website thus markets the Papertorn aesthetic in a form that can be worn directly or used in everyday life. Anne Mondy

This foray into fashion is, in fact, far from trivial. It corresponds quite precisely to her conception of art: a work does not necessarily have to remain confined within a frame. It can be found on a canvas, a wall, a car, a cushion or an item of clothing. As early as 2016, she had in fact developed PaperTorn as a brand combining personalised paintings, home décor and objects, long before the current Anne Mondy Signature range. Série Series

It would therefore be reductive to present Anne Mondy solely as ‘Pierre Mondy’s daughter’. This family connection is obviously significant, and she does not seek to deny it. On the contrary, she embraces the legacy of a love for creativity and popular culture. But she has turned it into something else. Whereas her father directed actors and staged shows, she stages images, fragments of memory and objects.

And there is perhaps a lovely passing of the baton in this story. Pierre Mondy belonged to that generation of French artists who became familiar faces to millions of viewers. Anne Mondy sometimes takes these images from cinema, television and popular culture, literally tears them apart, and then reassembles them. Not to erase the past, but to give it a new form.

Anne Mondy has therefore not merely inherited a name: she has forged her own signature. And now, that signature is even worn on one’s person
