They are twenty-five, thirty or forty years old. They have just got married. They are laughing. They are looking out over Paris. They have no idea yet what will happen next.
It is this contradiction that strikes me today: a photograph cannot possibly stop time, but it can preserve the tiniest trace that a moment took place.
Paris Said Yes is ultimately less about marriage than about that.
Of our desire to hold on to what passes by.
Of the sometimes absurd beauty of wanting to preserve a face, a gesture, a light or a story.
And of this city where, for generations, strangers have continued to come to do something incredibly simple: to stand side by side in front of a camera and imagine the future.
For twenty years, I was there to watch.
Today, these images have become a film.
And Paris, once again, says yes.
‘Paris Said Yes’ — a film, a song and photographs by Frédéric Vignale.
