And then I had a hunch.
A real one.
The sort of hunch you sometimes get about a band before everyone else starts talking about them seriously.
Don’t Kill The Cow is a name you remember. Firstly because it’s funny, a bit absurd, almost impossible to forget. But above all because behind it lies a band that already possesses what many spend years searching for: an identity.
They’re from the Geneva area, they’ve been playing together for several years, they’ve already got plenty of live experience under their belts, and you can hear it. Nothing feels cobbled together. Nothing feels artificially ‘trendy’. There’s authenticity, sound, energy, and above all, a real sense of coherence.
What I really like is precisely this way of not overdoing the effects. The rock is there, the guitars are there, but it’s never a show-off. The band leaves room for the vocals, the silences, the pauses, the shifts in tension.
And this singer, truly, has something special.
A presence.
A way with words.
A flow.
She doesn’t set out to impress, and that’s precisely why she does.
The recent tracks in French also give the impression that the band has found an even more personal voice. ‘Fumée Noire’, ‘Salut.’, ‘Les Os de Fer’, ‘Ivresse’: the titles themselves already say something about the band’s world. There’s darkness, sensitivity and substance, but never that affected heaviness sometimes found in certain bands who are desperate to appear profound.
Don’t Kill The Cow is still sufficiently off the beaten track for us to enjoy the pleasure of discovery. And that’s precisely where it gets interesting.
I may be wrong, of course.
But I have this very clear impression that this band can go much further.
Not because they tick all the boxes.
Precisely because they don’t tick too many of them.
They’ve got personality, a singer who immediately grabs your attention, proper tracks and that little something you can’t fake: the urge to listen to the next one.
So yes, I’m taking a chance on them.
Make a note of the name: Don’t Kill The Cow.
I’ve got a very good hunch about them.
