Is Pierre Robert really Brigitte Macron’s cousin? What we know about the case

The story is sensational enough to have gone viral on social media: a man described as ‘Brigitte Macron’s cousin’ is at the centre of a very serious legal case with international implications. But behind this sensational headline lie, in reality, two different stories. The first is a very real legal case. The second concerns an alleged family link to Brigitte Macron, which is far less firmly established.

The man at the centre of the investigation is called Pierre Robert. This businessman from Beauvais has been charged and remanded in custody as part of investigations into alleged offences of the utmost seriousness, notably human trafficking and sexual offences involving minors. Like any person under investigation, Pierre Robert is presumed innocent until he has been finally judged.

The case extends far beyond Beauvais and the borders of France. A joint investigation between France and Senegal has led to several arrests in that country. The investigations are seeking, in particular, to determine the existence and possible operation of a system of sexual exploitation of young boys, as well as the precise roles of the various suspects.

This is therefore an extremely serious legal matter. But how did Brigitte Macron come to be linked to this story?

Not through the judicial investigation.

To the best of our knowledge, her name is not implicated in the facts under investigation. The link emerged on the internet, where Pierre Robert began to be presented as ‘Brigitte Macron’s cousin’.

This claim is based, in particular, on a family tree circulated online. According to this reconstruction, Pierre Robert and Brigitte Macron are said to share great-great-grandparents. If this family connection were fully proven, it would therefore be a particularly distant relationship and certainly not that of two cousins belonging to a close-knit family circle.

However, even this distant link must be treated with caution. Genealogy experts who have examined the information made public have pointed out that certain documents needed to verify the various family connections are missing. It would therefore be unwise to present Pierre Robert as ‘Brigitte Macron’s cousin’ as an absolute certainty at this stage.

Above all, we must avoid a far more problematic misinterpretation: even if this distant kinship were ultimately established, it would obviously in no way implicate Brigitte Macron in the allegations against Pierre Robert.

To date, no known legal evidence implicates Brigitte Macron in this case. Nor is there any known evidence to suggest that she was aware of the alleged offences. The legal case concerning Pierre Robert and the question of this possible family connection are two separate matters.

It is precisely this distinction that tends to be lost when the story circulates on social media.

‘Brigitte Macron’s cousin implicated in a child sex offence case’ is a remarkably effective headline. It juxtaposes a highly recognisable name, a family connection and a particularly sensitive criminal case. Readers may then unconsciously draw a connection between these three elements, even though no such link has been established.

The role of journalism is precisely to do the opposite: to separate what we know from what we assume.

What we do know is already serious enough: a major judicial inquiry is under way, Pierre Robert has been placed under formal investigation, and the inquiries have an international dimension. They must now establish the exact facts and determine who is responsible.

What cannot be presented with the same certainty is just as important: that Pierre Robert is a close relative of Brigitte Macron. A family tree available online suggests a very distant common ancestry, but the evidence needed to establish the entire genealogical chain beyond doubt is incomplete.

Above all, nothing in the known judicial evidence links Brigitte Macron to the events under investigation.

This story ultimately serves as an excellent example of how certain contemporary rumours are constructed. They do not necessarily stem from a complete fabrication. They may arise from a perfectly real event to which uncertain information is added, followed by an insinuation.

The authentic fact then lends credibility to everything surrounding it.

It is precisely for this reason that we must face the Pierre Robert affair head-on, without downplaying its seriousness but without adding to it what the investigation does not reveal.

It is serious enough in its own right without the need to invent another scandal around it.
