He is seven years old. The age of Year 2, of cartoons, of school bags that are too big and of bedtime stories. And yet, since Friday morning, this little boy has found himself at the centre of a news story so extraordinary that it seems almost impossible to conceive: he is suspected of having stabbed his 49-year-old aunt to death in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, in the Val-de-Marne.

The events took place during the night of Thursday 17 to Friday 18 September 2026. At around 4.30 am, the emergency services were called to attend to a woman who had been seriously injured in a stabbing. The victim, who had been stabbed in the neck amongst other places, managed to make her way out onto the street before collapsing. Despite the efforts of the emergency services, she died shortly afterwards from massive blood loss.

And then came this staggering statement. Speaking to the police, the child reportedly explained of his own accord that he was responsible for the attack and that he had wanted to defend his mother during a violent argument between her and his aunt. RTL reports, in particular, that he allegedly stated he did not want to ‘go to prison’ and that he had defended his mum. His mother is said to have given a version of events along the same lines.

But we must immediately treat this whole story with a great deal of caution. Because a 7-year-old is, after all, just a 7-year-old. Because a traumatic incident can lead to confused statements. Because it is necessary to establish who was actually holding the knife, under what circumstances, what the child saw, what he understood and what might have been told to him. Investigators have, in fact, examined the possibility that an adult may have attempted to pin the blame on the child. According to information published on Friday evening by *Le Parisien*, the investigations nevertheless reinforced the line of inquiry suggesting that the boy had in fact delivered the fatal blow. His mother had been taken into police custody and the child was in hospital.

This is perhaps where this case becomes even more mind-boggling. Our conception of crime is almost always based on the notion of intent, responsibility and an awareness of the gravity of an act. But what do these words really mean when we are talking about a child who is only 7 years old?

French law itself demands this caution. The Code of Juvenile Criminal Justice stipulates that a child under the age of 13 is presumed not to be capable of discernment. For criminal liability to be established, it would have to be shown that the child understood and intended their act, and that they are capable of understanding the meaning of the proceedings against them. And, whatever the circumstances, no sentence may be imposed on a child under the age of 13.

It is therefore not simply a matter of whether that little hand held a knife. The key issue will be to understand what happened in the minutes leading up to the incident, the family environment in which this scene took place, and what a child of that age might have perceived of the argument between two adults.

There is, of course, a victim. A 49-year-old woman has died. A family has been torn apart. And the investigation will need to establish exactly who is responsible.

But at the heart of this case is also a 7-year-old boy whose life has probably just been turned upside down forever.

The danger, then, would be to be too quick to paint him as a miniature monster simply because the story is extraordinary enough to make the headlines. At the age of 7, even if an act of extreme violence may have been committed, one does not think, assess or understand death in the same way as an adult.

This case therefore goes beyond a mere news item. It confronts the justice system and society with an almost impossible question: what do we do when an irreparable act appears to have been committed by someone who is only just beginning to understand what ‘irreparable’ means?

For the time being, only one course of action seems reasonable: to let the investigators establish the facts and refuse to write the ending of the story for them.

For behind the sensational headline, ‘a seven-year-old boy is reported to have killed his aunt’, there may lie a reality that is far more complex, far darker and certainly far more tragic.
